I have an 06 Ody with original Nav DVD. My father got a new 2010 Ody and before I spend $185 for an updated DVD in mine I wanted to see if there was enough difference to justify it. So I popped my father's 2010 disc in my 06 Ody.
All worked well, but I saw pretty much NO difference in my area and nav system operation. Went to put my old disc back in and the system will not accept it. Since the 2010 disc looks like it upgraded firmware. I called the Honda Nav # and they said buy a new disc for $200 or take it to the dealer and they 'may' be able to help but I may need the unit replaced at my cost. This is ridiculous! Is there a procedure to force a downgrade on the firmware back to my 06 version? If so, is there any risk I will 'brick' the unit?
I need to choose between: 1) Try to down grade and the risk. 2) Waste $200 to get 2010 disc that has no improvements for me 3) Have a dead $2000 nav system Any advice would be appreciated. Since the 2010 disc looks like it upgraded firmware. Couldn't you just have looked at the coverage on your dad's car's navi to see any differences? I don't know if it's the same in the 3rd gen, but when I had my 2nd gen Ody, I ran into this same problem. There was a connector coming of out the cable by where it enters the NAV unit under the seat. That connector is not labeled or anything (it's just dangling there) but it has two slots in it that can be 'jumpered' by a paperclip.
If you have it jumpered while you turn on the power, the NAV will go into a service menu where one of the options is to force download firmware from whatever DVD you have in it. That was the only way to get the NAV working again on an older firmware disc. Again, I haven't checked to see if this connector exists on the 3rd gen Odys, but it's worth checking.
Let me know what you find. I'm curious now too! When I use this smilie I am NOT calling you stupid.

Anyone know how to force this download? That is the correct way to do a forced download. Go into the diagnostic mode then the version screen make sure under MODEL it says 'SHJA' (and not SHJX) make sure your dvd is inserted in the nav unit Select 'Download' and that should work!
If it still doesn't work, then the dealer has to download/install a patch using their iN network OR you can just put that money towards a new DVD. When I use this smilie I am NOT calling you stupid.
